Every summer and winter, Kid2Kid proudly hosts our biannual “Got Your Back” initiative — a volunteer-driven effort led by youth ages 4–16. This hands-on event brings together young volunteers to pack approximately 100 backpacks (in the summer) or winter totes (in the winter), which are then delivered to children and families at the Red Door Family Shelter in Leslieville.

Our Back-to-School initiative, held each July, equips kids with essential supplies like backpacks, water bottles, notebooks, markers, and other classroom necessities. In February, our Winter Tote edition includes cozy items such as gloves, hats, fleece blankets, hot chocolate packets, and other comforting winter treats.
Part of the funding for this initiative comes from our Kids’ Marketplace, where youth entrepreneurs donate a portion of their profits to help purchase the items we pack. It’s a full-circle moment of kids helping kids — and learning the power of generosity along the way.

The “Got Your Back” event takes place at Beaches Recreation Centre (6 Williamson Road) and lasts about 45-60 minutes. It's a meaningful, age-appropriate way for children and teens to see the impact of their efforts firsthand. Volunteers often come away with a better understanding of what a shelter is, why some families may struggle to afford school or winter supplies, and how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Want to get involved? Volunteer spots are limited, so be sure to sign up once we announce the date by emailing us at beacheskid2kids@gmail.com. We announce event dates at the end of June (for July) and end of January (for February) on kid2kids.ca and social media channels — be sure to follow along!
Whether it’s your first time or you’re returning for another season, “Got Your Back” is a wonderful opportunity to give back, spark important conversations, and spread kindness in our community.
