On Monday July 18th a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers gathered outdoors to volunteer in our annual "Got Your Back" - back to school initiative.
We are proud to say that this year we double the number of backpacks that we delivered to Red Door Shelter. This was made possible thanks to the contribution of folks in our community, as well as our generous sponsors.
Our superstar kid volunteers worked quickly and efficiently despite the extremely hot weather. They also made some beautiful and inspiring cards to include in the backpacks. Specials thanks goes out to Emma Yee who initiated this idea and had some fantastic artwork.
Afterwards we treated them to pizza, popsicles (thanks you Marilyn) and fruits kebabs (thank you Amber), and refreshing watermelon (thank you Carla - who is also one of our Kid2Kid Team Members).
The most rewarding part for us adults is hearing the questions the children have about our project, such as:
"Will this [back to school supplies] make the kids feel like they fit in more at school?"
"Why can't they afford to buy this stuff themselves?"
And trying to relay the answers in the best way we can. How rewarding it is to be able to give back while teaching out kids about it.
We are currently looking for sponsors who would like to donate supplies to our winter and summer initiatives. This includes tangible supplies or monetary contributions. Please contact us if you'd like to learn more about this opportunity.
